Act 101, the Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste Reduction Act, was enacted in 1988 to establish a state and local program for comprehensive municipal waste management, encouraging waste reduction and recycling.
Included in the Act is a mandate for counties to develop a solid waste management plan every 10 years, assuring there is sufficient disposal capacity for the county to manage its municipal waste for that 10-year period. The plan also discusses the effort of all stakeholders within the county to reach the state recycling goal of 35 percent.
The update to the county’s current solid waste plan is available for public review and comment until May 12.
In addition to the update being accessible on the county’s website, a hard copy is in the recycling office at 850 Washington Street, St. Marys, and is available for review during regular business hours, 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call the recycling office at 814-776-5373.
Any comments should be directed to the recycling office.
