Mission Statement

To assure a safe environment for our community and provide a substantial level of services directed in a courteous and respectful manner for the protection of lives, property, and civil rights of all citizens and visitors.

Duties

The Office of Sheriff is mandated by the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and is the highest ranking law enforcement office in the county. As an independent elected official, the Sheriff has both law enforcement and court duties. Core functions include service of civil and criminal processes for the Court of Common Pleas and Magisterial District Courts. This service is also provided to attorneys, businesses, and citizens.

Security for the Court of Common Pleas and other county buildings is a daily function. Weekly schedules involve prisoner transports from state and county institutions across the Commonwealth for scheduled court proceedings, and service and enforcement of Protection from Abuse Orders. When called upon, the Office extradites wanted persons from other states and areas of the Commonwealth.

The Sheriff’s Office also conducts Sheriff’s sales regarding real property and levies and conduct sales of personal property. Additionally, the Office issues other specific regulatory licensing for the county and License to Carry Firearms. These services are provided to Elk County citizens with the assistance of an Officer Manager, Chief Deputy, several sworn deputies, and a Solicitor.
